Cell membranes act as gatekeepers for the cell, which allows nutrients to enter and thwarts toxins from entering. The cell membrane helps in the removal of cellular garbage and maints reliability against diseases.
Lycopene not only possesses antioxidant properties but also plays an important role in the prevention of heart disease by restraining free radical damage to LDL cholesterol. Depositing of cholesterol in the plaques may lead to hardness and narrowness of arteries. Thus before its deposition, it must be oxidized by free radicals. Lycopene can thwart LDL cholesterol from being oxidized due to its strong antioxidant properties.
Along with antioxidant properties, it has been found that lycopene also helps to restrain the growth of tumors. Researchers found that due to a communication gap among cells, this gives rise to the abnormal growth of cells. Such growth of abnormal cells leads to the results of development of the cancerous tumors.
According to recent studies, researchers showed that lycopene also helps in boosting of sperm concentrations in infertile men. In a study, 30 infertile men were given lycopene supplemented diet which results in significant growth in sperm concentration and also results in six pregnancies.
